Eastcut Wood Building Solutions Helps Build Hope Through Fairfax Homes Partnership

Trenton, NS – Eastcut Wood Building Solutions is proud to have contributed to the successful completion of Fairfax Homes, a meaningful affordable housing development that brings eight new homes to families in Dartmouth’s Black community.

As part of Akoma Holdings Inc.’s vision to create safe, affordable housing on the historic site of the former Nova Scotia Home for Colored Children, Eastcut provided advanced prefabricated building components that accelerated construction timelines while maintaining exceptional quality standards.

Working alongside sister company DORA Construction, which managed the overall build, Eastcut manufactured custom wall and floor systems at its Trenton facility. This offsite construction approach allowed the project to progress efficiently, helping to meet the urgent housing needs of families selected through Akoma’s community-focused process.

“Projects like Fairfax Homes remind us why we do what we do,” said Donald MacDonald, Owner of Eastcut Wood Building Solutions. “When our manufacturing capabilities can help deliver quality homes faster to families who need them most, that’s when innovation truly matters.”

The development was made possible through funding from the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s Rapid Housing Initiative, with additional support from the Province of Nova Scotia. The eight two-bedroom homes, each spanning 768 square feet, are designed specifically for Black Nova Scotian families in and around the Preston area.

Fairfax Homes honours the legacy of Reverend Dr. Donald E. Fairfax, the first Black president of the Nova Scotia Home for Colored Children’s Board of Directors. The neighbourhood’s new streets bear the names of other community leaders: Dr. Donald Skeir Way and Paris Lane, named after Sisters Mary and Cherry Paris, who served as Matrons at the NSHCC.

Eastcut’s role demonstrates the company’s commitment to sustainable, efficient construction methods that serve Atlantic Canada’s communities. By manufacturing precision-engineered building components in a controlled factory environment, Eastcut helps projects achieve faster completion times, reduced waste, and consistent quality – critical factors for affordable housing initiatives.

The project brought together multiple Nova Scotia partners, including OPX, Grade Edge, Limerock Electric, Scotia Mechanical, Scotia Foundations, Bossy Concrete, and Fulton’s Painting. Even the storage sheds were locally built by students at NSCC’s Akerley campus through their Housing and Construction Fundamentals course.

This partnership between Eastcut, DORA Construction, and Akoma Holdings represents the third year of collaboration on impactful affordable housing projects serving Nova Scotia’s diverse communities.
